Past projects

Every year, the Videocity team curates a socially relevant thematic concept, which is adapted to Videocity projects and locations throughout the year. As part of the curation, the team selects 50–60 video works by Swiss and international artists, with some years having specific regional focuses.

In this section, you can explore past Videocity projects by concept. Please click on the relevant concept below to see the exhibitions that have taken place since 2019.

Posthuman

The “Posthuman” cycle invites artistic positions that shape their forms of reality, questioning our current position and how our lives can be altered or developed further by science and the programming of machines. Moreover, Videocity encourages the public to contemplate and question the state of humanity by reflecting on how we might redefine the essence of being human.

Simply Nature

How to reconnect to a nature which has been destined to disappear. How can human behaviour be changed to stop the climate crisis and who are the protagonists that can afford to do so? The video artists in this cycle reflect on the relationship between humans and nature, whilst positioning human beings as an integral part of nature itself.

Utopia Today

The artists of the cycle "Utopia Today" are not concerned with negotiating existing dystopian scenarios, but rather with trying to detect utopian moments in the present, even if they have only minimal visibility, and to put them into the picture artistically. This is also a young generation that is less burdened by history and fully exploits the possibilities of the digital age, creating parallel worlds to current political constellations.

Ukraine

At the beginning of the war in Ukraine in spring 2022, the Videocity team corresponded with Ukrainian colleagues asking what we could do to help. A frequent answer was to give Ukrainian artists a presence in the art world. Listening to this advice, Videocity has been supporting Ukrainian artists and promoting Ukrainian video art in different locations and countries. Since 2024, Videocity has also been organising exhibitions in Ukraine with the help of local partners and Ukrainian curators.

Flower Power

Special cycle to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the Republic of Korea in 2023.

Three Korean artists and three Swiss artists participated in “Flower Power”. The exhibition creates new connections and inspires us to be connected to ourselves and with others.

Eye-View

Whether by another’s gaze or an artificial lens, rarely a moment goes by uncaptured in today’s world. What was once a question of reality phrased in relation to not being seen, is now phrased in relation to not being documented, as being “seen” has taken on a completely new meaning in the wake of personal cameras, surveillance devices and digital media platforms.

Loneliness II

The theme of “Loneliness” was rarely as relevant as during the current health crisis, where many find themselves isolated from their families, colleagues, and friends. What long-term impact will the pandemic have for both individuals and businesses? What are the different ways in which loneliness can be manifested?

Food – Between Advertising and Consumption

Food is a much-debated topic. Our relationship to food is influenced by marketing and its visual language. Finally, the handling and cooking of food reveals attitudes towards life and reflects the diversity of societies.

Special Projects

Occasionally, Videocity organises special projects beyond its yearly themes. Find out more about special projects in this section.
