Eye-View Utopia Ukraine

After the start of the war in Ukraine in spring 2022, the Videocity team was corresponding with Ukrainian artists. From our exchange, we learned that we can help by giving their works a presence in the art world. So, we showed Ukrainian video art in Basel and Bern, followed by exhibitions in other towns.

As the war continues, we believe it is important to show Ukrainian artists‘ videos as often as possible in order to share their perspectives and to stand by their side.

Artists: Copa & Sordes, Maksym Khodak, Olia Fedorova, Yana Bachynska, Sergey Bratkov, Diana Derii, Marina Dykukha

Women from Iran

Iranian contemporary art is rarely shown in Europe. Curator Zahira Mozafari focuses on the work of two young women who live in Tehran, where they exhibit in galleries and at international film festivals, but have never been shown in the cities on the banks of the Rhine. What is special is that the two artists live in Tehran and critically reflect on global issues such as environmental pollution and the status of women in their short videos.

Location and host:

The Lorin cargo ship is travelling on the Rhine from Basel to Rotterdam for the fifth time since 2019. In terms of the goods transported, this is the second largest waterway in the world. Lorin stops at various moorings and presents its very special cargo: a very diverse programme of music and art is once again on offer for the public strolling along the banks in 2024. Anmari Mëtsa Yabi Wili is the initiator. Alongside 29 musicians from all over the world and in various genres, she has invited Videocity on the cruise on the Rhine for the first time to participate in an experimental and stimulating exchange with the musicians.

Two video cycles, the first showing videos by Ukrainian artists and the second by Iranian artists, will be musically interpreted in spontaneous live acts, turning the flow of filmic images into a unique experience.

Years ago, Anmari Mëtsa Yabi Wili breathed new life into an old cargo ship, calling it Lorin, where she pools her diverse artistic activities and worldwide contacts. The pianist and composer also initiates interdisciplinary projects. She also appears as a performer with or without voice, as part of the ensemble LE DONNE IDEALI or shows her works of art in the freighter's gallery. The Basel native lives aboard her culture cargo ship Lorin, travelling between Basel and Rotterdam.

The Videocity team and the invited video artists are delighted to be part of this multimedia synthesis of the arts. Above all we look forward to surprising and inspiring encounters with musicians and audiences from all over the world.
