Extraction Echoes: Art, Empathy and Non-Human Narratives

Extraction Echoes is a collaborative project between Forum Sudutpandang (FSDP), an artist collective based in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, and Videocity UK, a project promoting video art in public spaces and daily life supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant programme. Extraction Echoes consists of a digital exchange and an exhibition program in Newcastle, Palu and Jakarta. The artists whose video works are selected for the exhibition will be invited to take part in the digital exchange. 

Digital Exchange dates: April 2025
Exhibition dates: summer-autumn 2025.

Exhibition Locations: Newcastle, Palu, Jakarta.

Eligibility:

  • Artists based in or with a connection to Northern England (UK).

  • Artists living in or with links to Eastern Indonesia (Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Papua).

Artist fees: 

The fee includes the participation in 3 group exhibitions and the time dedicated to the Digital Exchange. 

  • UK-based artists will receive £600

  • Indonesia-based artists will be paid £350. 

We are looking for one-channel video works suitable for exhibitions in public space of no longer than 10:00 min, on the themes of:

  • Extraction

  • Mining

  • Digital extraction

  • Climate impact

We particularly welcome non-human narratives focuses on empathy for/with the natural world. Please note that the videos will be presented in public space in the UK and Indonesia, which means that in some cases it might not be possible to include sound.
