The November REX Box programme has been put together by Xavier Kat. Xavier is a photographer and filmmaker from Oaxaca, Mexico and works at the Tepeyac Human Rights Center, where he is involved with the Land Defense Network. He first joined Videocity as a fellow. Since 2021, he has organised exhibitions and workshops for Videocity in Mexico. For his selection of videos, he was guided by the following question: How do we engage with our memory or our remembrance? Xavier writes:
“An image transits our inner world, as a butterfly it flutters around and affects multiple zones; the image and its effects are amplified by the attention given to it. Sometimes it seems it goes beyond our inner world; causing sensations to appear, faintly, like ghosts that want to return, impressions that haunt and trigger desires wanting to be consumed. Possessed, we are transported to a different moment, another time, a distant land and a distant body. An inner duality without any separation. Distance becomes memory.”
